CLUE #1
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was a major crusader stronghold and trading center. It’s located on the northern coast of our mystery country:

Two thousand years ago, the tyranical vassel king of our mystery country was a prolific builder and a paranoid murderer. A number of his projects are on the standard tourist route today. He ordered this city built in honor of his Roman overlords:

This site is located in the far north of our mystery country, in a famously contested border region. It sits at the base of one of the region’s highest mountains and is near the country’s only ski resort. In ancient times, this site was sacred to the Greek god Pan. The ancient city here was built by the son of the tyrant who built the city in the previous clue and the two cities are similarly named.
